Mask Project
This project helped me to realize inner strengths and weaknesses. I have really enjoyed seeing how societies work. I was able to really express myself through this project. “Mom can i go into town? “,i ask, “yeah i guess!’, she replies. “can i get some money?”, “no taylor i dont have any money for you!”, “but mom i might need some for food.,” taylor we dont have enough money right now. (i think in my head that this is going to be embaresing to tell my friends i dont have any money). “ mom i cant go into town without any money that will be so embarrassing. yes taylor i know but”……. as i enturupt her. “mother my friends will think im wierd because i have no money and Im white that will be bad”. “taylor just deal with it.”
I have been socialized positively and negatively as a white girl. People like my family, strangers, and friends are the ones who usually socialize me.. I am seen as not too rich but rich enough to afford things and do good things and go to a nice and rich school. And since I am white I need to have enough money to be able to afford things like makeup and clothing. That makes me as a person look outstanding and so called ‘flawless” and “perfect.” for example. lets take a african american man. this gentleman should be poor. he should be followed in the stores, because he will definitely shoplift if you don't not follow him around. they always have guns weed and are always fighting and always in jail. they always dress like gangsters, or look like they are in a gang. and you should ALWAYS be scared of them or you will get your a$$ kicked, oh and never make eye contact or you will die. ( p.s. i dont not agree with this they are people too but with a different skin color and they are lucky because they don't get sunburnt :) #lucky)
Being socialized is being judge for your race, gender, sexuality, class, religion, abilities, disability. For example I am white so I am rich I go to a good school and I have good clothing and rich friends which is a standard for every white person. this is very judgemental in my opinion. because it makes me feel less then i really am. which society is really good at doing. and being socialized is supposed to make you feel like you have to be a certain way then what you really want to be!
Everyday someone is socialized in some way, either negative or positive.I am a girl so I need to be skinny I should be flawless and beautiful , with long tan legs. Because that is just how our society works out. Even if you think that you are not being socialized at all whatsoever. Isn’t society amazing at brainwashing you to think you are hearing the truth when you are just being told lies. well awesome because thats what it wants to do. and guess what you are falling for it, i am falling for it, everyone is falling for it. you may not believe it but guess what it is to wake up and come to the real world.because no one is not socialized. even if you you think you dress the way you want to. even if you don't care what you look like. even if you don't need to be healthy or look fit. deep down you want to look like that. and someone is socializing you everywhere you go even if you don't realize it. and the worst part is there is no running away.
So you may ask why does gender, race, sexuality, class, religion, abilities, and disabilities matter. Because those are the main things you are judge upon. I'm white so I need to be rich have white rich friends and get all the “hot boys”. Im straight so I wont be judge because I am normal but for gays and lesbians there are not human (so not true). I'm in the lower middle class range so I am judge because since I am white I should be rich not middle class. I am a christian so might be judge by different religions based on what I believe. Since I don't have visible disabilities im good and in the safe zone.
i think that people are scared to stand out and be themselves because they don't want to be judge by anyone. and i know the word judge is very cliche. because everyone gets judge. and it really does not feel good to be judge. one time when i was in 8th grade i wanted to see what people would do or say about me when. i dressed like a nerd when i was label as a popular white girl. so i dressed up in rainbow knee high socks, bright red hat, shorts that went down to top of my knees, and a bright pink shirt. i felt very awkward and didn't feel comfortable in this outfit when showed up at school. because i knew i would be judge by someone. and as i was walking down the hallways i was label as a freak, a dumbass, and (here is the funny one) a christmas ornament. in reality i laughed at this because i thought it was funny because i as popular. and since i was popular i figured there were just jealous. and since there were a nothing who no one cared about i felt better about myself. but that brings me back to that everyone cares how they are looked at in reality or even deep down because. it simply just does not feel good. and why was i scared i was scared to stand out because everyone knows the normon how to dress
Being socialized is being judge for your race, gender, religion, sexuality, class, abilities, and disabilities. For example a white woman pulls out her wallet and has an unusual amount of money. But no will say anything because this is “normal”. Now lets say a black guy pulls out his wallet with an unusual amount of money. Most people would be scared maybe step away. And think he is a thief and he belongs in jail. Because he has “ too much” money. My point is if something stands out about you. People will notice and people will think differently about you. Socialization puts people in a position of having to be perfect. For girls they should have nice skin, straight teeth, healthy hair, nice body, and etc. so this makes most girls have to put makeup on and spend lots of time picking out an outfit and doing their hair. and guys have to have a “hot” face or their a complete reject. so girls can't ever play football and wrestling because it is just “weird”. and guys should not do cheerleading, volleyball, ballet, and other girls sports or hobbies.
so being socialized is being almost perfect. its being known as a perfect person. and for me i know that i need to be known as a pretty rich white girl. and of course go to a nice school, have nice clothing, good makeup, and no all of the brands of everything. and let me tell you this does really bother me but i know that i can't run away from this. i know that its what we live by and thats just how it is. Socialization is when an individual inquires a personal identity, social identity, and learns the social norms, behaviors, social skills, and the appropriate social position by an institution or a culture. You are affected by society in everywhere in every way. When you talk to your families, friends, teacher, your neighbor, or even the cashers at the store. People are telling you their opinions and thoughts that effect how you think and see things. When you see things in magazines at the store or an add while watching a video you are also being socialized. This is telling you how to look and think and do. Every thing in your life is giving you a way to think and a way to live your life.
My essay talked about how I have been socialized positively as negatively as a female. I wrote about how we have been "brainwashed" by society. I also wrote about the ways we get socialized negatively. How when we watch a video or look at a magazines we are being socialized. This influences our everything because we are always being socialized, in whatever we do. My mask ties into my essay by symbolizing an everyday life for a typical girl and how she I socialized in a negative way. I have bold red words that symbolize what some people think of girls and names that girls have been called. Then there is make-up on the mask to show how girls "cover-up" and don't show their true identity. There is also a zipped mouth on my mask to show that since I am just a girl my opinion doesn't matter and I'm "just a girl." I have music notes on my mask because I have been judged because of what music I listen to. I have a cross on my mask because my parents are religious and I am not sure of what religion I am and I feel like an outsider. When you open my mask it symbolizes me breaking the social norm and being myself. On the other mask you see a self portrait of myself.
As a class we wrote our essays and got a lot of peer critiquing. I liked this a lot because I could see my essay in another perspective and could make it even better and really make beautiful work. I also learned a bout the state offlow. I learned a lot about the state of flow and how you can use it to concentrate and really get into your assignment. You can really create beautiful work. I also learned how to use my time wisely, as in not spending all my time on my essay and not having any time for my mask, or vice versa.
I am really proud of my digital portfolio as an animas high school student. As a person I am proud o f how I have handled the transition of going from a tiny middle school to a high school. I think that I have handled it very well and am doing great. I want to improve on how I organize my work time. I procrastinate part of the time, because I don't want to face the fact that I might not get the best grade so I just don't do my work. I am really trying to get out of this habit and do the best I can and really make beautiful work on everything I do.
